Separation anxiety doesn't only happen to the baby! I hadn't planned on using the childcare service at our co-op grocery store. Isaac had never been left with strangers, and I wasn't thinking to start now.
All we planned was to grocery shop as a family, but his meltdown near the bagels changed our vision. I suggested Isaac and I check out childcare and sleepy eyed Jeremy looked very relieved and agreeable to finish the shopping solo.
The tall smiling pregnant lady who unlocked the door told me that parents weren't supposed to stay, that it would be too crowded. I was welcome to get him comfortable with the blocks and then stay close by outside for a little while.
"Eek-gods!" I thought. "Oh. Uh-oh. Umm." I said. "Well, I guess we could try. But you know? He's never done this before!"
He stuck an orange block in his mouth. I worried about germs. He took it out to watch the other kids. I made a very worried getaway.
Oh boy, I hovered outside that door! I stalked the little guy, standing to the side so he wouldn't see me through the window and at the same time peeking and peeking. His brown eyes looked HUGE and very far away.
My heart was racing when I went downstairs. I had left him! At least he could crawl. I told the checkout lady I definitely wouldn't have left him there if he wasn't crawling.
After helping Jeremy bag the groceries I went to go get him, breathlessly running up the stairs. I found him with a band of tape on his back that said "Isaac" in very nice handwriting. I couldn't decide if I loved it or wanted to tear it off right away, but first I took this photo.
