If you have some extra time (like if you show up for a wedding on the wrong day) in the Hudson Valley with your kiddos (or with not kiddos), I say check out the Vanderbilt Mansion! There are lovely spots to picnic, big shade trees to sit under, and interesting bugs to look at.
The mansion itself has a remarkable velvet bannister and big trophy heads of moose and deer in the "Gentleman's Room". Isaac felt strongly about the heads, pleading (over the soft voice of our tour guide), "See moose! Want to see moose again!" Surprisingly it didn't freak him out that the deer and moose were only heads and that they were hung on the wall above ornate fireplaces

You do have to pay for the tour to see the mansion, $8 per adult, but picnicking is free, and if you do go on the tour you are bound to learn something new, like how in Fredrick Vanderbilt's will, out of 57 names 33 were servants! Sisters and bothers got nuthin'. Tours run on the hour and last about an hour.
